Glass Plates Series [Late 19th - Mid 20th Century]

Digital copies of late 19th to mid 20th century photographs taken as part of ethnographic, historical and artistic research. Photographic subjects include architecture, clothing and costume, traditional industry and agriculture, Bulgarian material culture (including examples of pottery, tools and utensils), landscapes, weddings, traditional music and dances, landscapes and portrait photographs of local peoples.

The majority of the photographers are unidentified. The photographs were taken in Bulgaria, and in areas which today are part of Macedonia and Greece; the following districts are featured: Tutrakan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Kazanluk, Plovdiv, Radomir, Dedeagach, Smolian, Gabrovo, Asenovgrad, Iambol, Dranovo, Shumen, Varna, Ohrid, Trun, Elkovo, Samokov, Pazardhzik, Shopije, and the Rodopi Mountains.
