Ethnographic Photographs Series 2 [Late 19th - Mid 20th Century]

Digital copies of late 19th to mid 20th century photographs taken as part of ethnographic, historical and artistic research . Photographic subjects include architecture, Bulgarian material culture (including examples of tools and jewellery), traditional costumes and dress, landscapes, industry, and portrait photographs.

The photographs were primarily taken in Bulgaria, although a small number appear to have been taken in Germany, France and Macedonia. The following Bulgarian districts are all featured: Belen, Turnov, Stara Zagora, Pirot, Kiustendil, Sofia, Lom, Oriahovo, Smolian, Radomir, Vidin, Vratsa, Sevlievo, Lovech, Razgrad, Teteven, Tutrakan, Ruse and Silistra.

Work by various photographers is featured in the collection; unfortunately these are often unidentified, or identified by surname only. They include: O. Markolesko, Braborkov, Mikhailovski, B. Shnee, Kauerman & Dashkov, Iavan Karastoyanov, Gyurov & Zakhariev, Khainovich, Savov, Germanski, Max Kesler, A. Belkovski, Vladikov, I. Saveska, Nikolov, Karlo Albrecht, Dmitrov, Barnenkov, A. Wertheim, and I. Buresh.
