Police Magistrate Records 16 Aug 1867-21 Jan 1868

The volume contains cases brought before the Police Magistrate in the Police Office at Freetown between 16 August 1867 and 21 January 1868. It contains an alphabetical index that lists cases by the name of the defendant, and provides information on the offence and the page number in the volume. The volume includes the date of the case, the name of the Police Magistrate who heard the case, the name of the person charged, the offence, and whether the defendant confessed to the crime. It also includes reference to whether the case was dismissed, or the sentence given. The reports of cases sometimes include the accounts of the plaintiff and defendant, of the Police Constable and of some witnesses. The volume is bound in red cloth boards. There is extensive water damage, and traces of damage from iron gall. The top of the last pages is torn, and the paper is breaking away from the binding. The start and end dates recorded in the metadata are incorrect.
