The book was produced for public education, particuarly secondary education in the Colégio Pedro II, in the province of Rio de Janeiro. The author made use of old and then-current letters, maps, and blueprints held in public archives to detail Brazilian geography. The volume was dedicated to His Magesty the Emperor Pedro II, organized by Cândido Mendes de Almeida and published in Rio de Janeiro in 1868 by Lithographia do Instituto Philomathico.
