Sumanpa Stgo. del Estero R. Argentina [1930s-1960s]

Description: This envelope concerns the town and region of Sumanpa in the province of Santiago del Estero. It used to be an importante place because of its indigenous inhabitants (Sanavirones) and its economic role during the colonial and postcolonial times when it connected the silver mine of Potosí (now Bolivia) and the provinces of Córdoba and Santiago del Estero in Argentina. But, above all it has a religious significance due to the statue of Our Lady of Consolation that arrived in Argentina with the statue of Our Lady of Luján, patron saint of Argentina. Both were bought by a landowner in the 17th century in Pernambuco, Brazil. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation of Sumanpa or (Nuestra Señora de la Consolación ) has been kept in the same small church for almost four centuries. Our Lady of Consolation has received many titles and honours: Patron Saint of the drivers, of the province of Santiago del Estero, of the province’s culture, of the landowners, of the rain, of the humble and poor people, of the honour and dignity of Argentina, of the schools, and the policemen. It is a handmade envelope with photos and newspapers’ and magazines’ articles and clippings. Extent of original: Handmade envelope . Condition of original: Regular to bad condition.
