San Juan del Salvamento [1940s]

Description: The lighthouse of San Juan de Salvamento, known as the Lighthouse in the End of the World is the subject of this envelope. It is located in the Isla de los Estados, in the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, in Southern Patagonia. It was built in 1884 by an expedition to the Southern Atlantic led by Augusto Lasserre. It worked until 1902 when it was replaced by the Lighthouse of New Year. San Juan also counted with a jail for special prisoners that was later on moved.
