དཔེ་ཆ

A handwritten unbound Tibetan text (pecha) on handmade paper. Handwritten in "headless" Tibetan dbu med (Ume) script, ༄༅། །བསྲུང་བའི་འཁོར་ལོ་བརྒྱ་དང་བརྒྱད་བཞུགས་སོ། A book of 108 symbols, which are protective circles / protective mandalas, each with minimal textual explanation. These symbols are used in rituals by cho-was to protect against different kinds of possession, demons, violent deities and other evil or malicious forces that cause ailments, illness or disease in the villagers who seek help from the chowa.

Extent: One unbound book consisting of seven folios.

Size and dimensions of original material: Each folio is 9.5 cm x 55 cm.

Condition of original material: Some damage to page edges with loss of text / image.

Arrangement: Loose texts kept in the prayer room in a cardboard box. The precise country of origin is unknown. However it is almost certain that the original text was created in Tibet, though the specific material in question may have been copied locally in Spiti (India) at a later date.
