Boyden Plate Box 16: People, telescopes and urban scenes

A set of images which may relate to an expedition to observe a solar eclipse. Several images show street scenes in Murraysburg and Cradock, South Africa. A well-observed solar eclipse occurred on 01 Oct 1940. There is also a series of images showing people (including observatory director John Stefanos Paraskevopoulos) with a three-camera instrument on a driven equatorial fork mount. The device is set up outdoors at an unknown location, but certainly not the Boyden Observatory terrain. Unfortunately the faded pencilled note on the plate box, which reads: "Aug '84 Old instruments, film and plate ?HK Instr No 2", does not shed any light on the contents. All the images are undated. n/a. Extent: 16 glass plates. Size and dimensions of original material: Height 8.2cm, width 10.7cm, thickness 0.3cm. Condition of original material: Stable.
