A. W. Roberts Miscellaneous Papers No. 10 (Part 1 of 2)

Collection of essays, letters, and notes by A.W. Roberts. Most are undated. Except for one, all items are astronomically themed, mostly about variable stars. The exception is a 15-page essay titled "The outlook with regard to the South African Native.". Some items are about Sir David Gill (Astronomer Royal at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope). These items are a letter to Roberts from Johanna Emanuel (Cologne, Germany), in two parts, dated June 06 and June 08 (no year), concerning the death of Sir David Gill (7 pages); a draft essay about Sir David Gill (obituary?) (43 pages); a typed essay, "DAVID GILL - AN APPRECIATION / (By A.W.R.)" (5 pages); notes about Sir David Gill (9 pages); and a copy of a letter by Lady Gill (1 page). Most items are about variable stars. There are 10 essays: "Note on the variations of the S. Arae type." (9 pages); "Imperial Astronomy / I Weighing the Universe."" (18 pages); "Imperial Astronomy / II Egg shaped stars."" (18 pages); "On a Determination of the Absolute mass of U Pegasi" (55 pages, including calculations); "Variation of the star CPD -41°4511" [RR Vel] (5 pages); "Density and prolateness of Egg-shaped Binary Stars" (9 pages); and "A world on fire" (3 pages). There are also three untitled essays (total of 45 pages), about Nova Persei and R Carinae. In addition there is a partially disassembled note book with graphs about R Carinae (28 pages). There is also an unannotated reprint of "Secular variation in the period of R Carinae / By Alexander W. Roberts, D.Sc." by A.W. Roberts from MNRAS (June 1901)[not digitized]. Loose pages of notes about R Car and S Car, and several pages of notes of unknown significance, round out this collection. Previously listed as R045. n/a. Extent: Approximately 340 loose folios.
