Vessantara Jātaka: Sakkaparva

Title in Burmese: ဝေဿန္တရာဇာတ်တော်.

Title in Thai: พระเวสันดรชาดก สักกะบรรพ์.

Title in Mon: ပေင်တဲု?၊ သက္ကပဝ်။ ပတိလိက္ခပတွာ။ သက္ကပဝ်။ ဒါခုပတိလိက္ခပတွာ.

Transliterated title: SAKKAPAW.

Palm leaf manuscript of the Vessantara Jātaka, in 9 bundles, recounting one of Gotama Buddha''s past lives when he was Prince Vessantara, who gives all his possessions away. Note that the identification comes from the Thai name written in pen on the manuscripts - the Mon version of the name "Vessantuiw" is not found on any colophon. Each bundle has its own name in Mon, so I have listed each separately. For this bundle, I give the Mon name as based on the Thai. The ''title colophon'' contains information partly in Pali and partly in Mon. NB it may be saying who wrote which section of the bundle.

Extent: 6 of 9 bundles, approximately 22 faces.

Condition of original material: Stylus-inscribed palm leaf manuscript with no ink rubbed into etchings. Some letters have slightly unusual shapes. Legible and in good condition, complete and in order. Surface of some leaves rough or a bit discoloured (but not dirty).

Custodial history: Handwriting is Thai Mon, so manuscript is of local provenance.
