Book of baptisms of slave, free, and freed (forros/libertos) individuals from the church of Nossa Senhora Conceição de Jurujuba, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro dating from 22 Feb 1861 through 20 May 1883. The opening charter was signed by Municipal Judge José Sebastião Ferreira da Silva on 09 Oct 1861. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Celestino Otero, João de Araujo Alves Mariano, and Venancio Lins Telles Barreto. There are records of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of the Free Womb Law (Lei do Ventre Livre). Color and social condition of the baptized individuals are recorded underneath the name. There are some records of "manumissions in the baptismal font" (alforrias na pia batismal) as well as of baptisms of adults born in Africa. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 147 numbered folios with a cover. Some of the folios have been damaged by insects. Dimensions: 40cm X 26.5cm.
