1. Livro de Batismos de Escravos e Livres, 1742-1744

The volume records baptisms of enslaved and free people from the parish (Freguesia) of Paraíba dating from 29 Jun 1742 through 15 Jul 1744. A majority of the baptized were enslaved Africans and their descendants, although free people of color, indigenous people, and, to a lesser extent, Europeans also appear. A number of African ethnicities and place designations, such as Benguela, Cabo Verde, Ganguella, Grujanga, Mongolo, Mina, and Massangano are recorded. There are references to freed (forro) godparents. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Antonio del Aguda, Luiz de Soveral Coelho, and Agostinho de Barros Lima. Physical characteristics: The volume is incomplete and consists of 4 insect-damaged folios. It does not have a cover. Dimensions: 29cm x 21cm.
