Óbitos, 1871-1882

The volume records burials of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of Law 2.040/1871, the "Free Womb" Law, and registered in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Rio Bonito. The entries date from 19 Dec 1871 to 26 May 1882. There is no opening charter; the closing charter was signed by the Secretary of the Provincial Government of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio André Lima (?), and dated 01 May 1872. The entries were signed by Vicar Virtulino Bezerra Cavalcanti. The majority of people were enterred in the local cemetery, though some were enterred in the cemetery of the Basilica. Slaves belonging to Captain Gabriel Maria Damasco and Colonel Carlos José Mariano appear. The entries end on folio 86v. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 198 numbered folios with acover. Some of the folios have deteriorated, but are in good conditions overall. Dimensions: 33.5cm x 23cm.
