Casamentos de Forros e Livres, 1857-1872

This volume contains marriage records of freed (forro) and free individuals registered in the Church of São João Batista (Baptista) of Niterói-RJ dating from 12 Oct 1857 through 07 Feb 1872. The opening charter, dated 16 Apr 1844, was signed by Francisco Manoel de Bulhões, and there is no closing charter. Entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicars Thomaz de Aquino and Antonio de Mello Muniz Maia, commissioned Vicar Miguel Joaquim D’Araujo, Coadjutors José Luiz D'Almeida Martins and Antonio Gomes Xavier, and Canon Antonio da Immaculada Conceição. Included are marriages between Catholics and Protestants as well as free blacks. “Kidnapping” is mentioned in a free creole marriage on folio 92. Marriages recorded in the volume took place at the churches of N. Sra. das Dores (Ingá), N. Sra. da Conceição, and Ss. Sacramento na Corte  as well as the chapel of Asilo de Santa Leopoldina. The former name of the city of Niterói, the “Villa Real da Praia Grande,” is mentioned. Physical characteristics: The volume consists of 499 numbered folios with a cover. Many folios have been significantly damaged by ink. Dimensions: 32cm x 26cm. Images begin at folio 92 - and there are no images of folios 129 through 132 - due to the high degree of deterioration.
