Batismos, 1871-1888

This volume contains baptismal records from the Church of São João Batista de Icaraí (Carahy, Carii, Carahi) of children born to enslaved mothers after the passage of the Free Womb Law. Entries date from 10 December 1871 to 18 March 1888. The opening and closing charters were signed by Antonio André Lima Costa. The volume consists of 198 numbered folios. On folio 120 there is a correction that refers to folio 119. The entries were signed by the following clergy: Vicar Antonio Gomes Zavier, Conego Antonio da Imaculada (Immda) Conceição, Luis Raymundo da Silva Britto, Vicar Manuel Correia de Figueiredo, and João Aureliano Correia dos Santos, who transcribed the "Golden Law" that ended slavery in Brazil that closes the volume. Following the transcription of the Golden Law, the remaining pages are blank. Physical characteristics: The volume has 198 numbered folios. A few folios show signs of ink deterioration.
