The Quran with Glosses

Transliterated title: Alkuraan Fasaroo.

An old copy of the Quran, which has numerous glosses in Arabic and Soninke. It was written during the time when Soninke was the language of many Islamic scholars and educators in Casamance. Mandinka scholars, who were students of the Soninke, later developed their own Ajami writing system following the tradition of their Soninke teachers and subsequently wrote glosses and translated texts from classical Arabic and Soninke into Mandinka.

Custodial history: The owner inherited it from his father, Mamadou Lamine Diante, who also inherited it from his grandfather, Alphousseyni Diante.

Extent and format of original material: 389 pages.

Physical characteristics: Unbound manuscript. Some parts are torn. The type of paper used in this manuscript is unusually large.
