The Book Began

Transliterated title: Kitaaboo Foloota.

This manuscript is a copy of a Mandinka Ajami poem titled Kitaaboo Foloota (English: The Book Began), which alludes to the beginning of the Quran. The poem praises God and Prophet Muḥammad and teaches tawḥīd (English: oneness of God). This poem is popular among Mandinka people and has been found in several different collections. It was authored by the famous Mandinka scholar called Alpha Diadji.

Custodial history: The current owner received the manuscript from his nephew, Makili Gassama. His nephew inherited the document from his father after his death. His father was a Mandinka religious scholar who lived in Sambouya in Guinea Bissau until his death.
