A narrative thangka illustrating the story of Darma Dhoti / Dharma Dode. Size including the cloth surround 117 x 69 cm. Image (melong) size 69 x 43cm. A story about the son of Marpa Lotsawa, who was guru/teacher of Milarepa. The son dies from when he falls from a horse. His father had the power to prolong his sons life, long enough for the boy to learn how to transfer his consciousness into the body of a dead pigeon. The pigeon then flies to India, dies but transfers its consciousness into the dead body of a boy who becomes the Indian teacher Tiphupa. Creation dates: Mid 19th Century. Date suggested by the owner. Custodial history: An old thangka handed down within his family, perhaps from the time of his great grandfather, the first performer in his lineage.
