A thangka illustrating the story of Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, known to Tibetans as Chenrezig (Wylie spyan ras gzigs). The painting shows a few simple scenes of the killing of animals as well as a small scene depicting hell and the judgment of the dead in the bottom left corner. The thangka was painted by Pema Wangdu's teacher Rinchen Wangdrak (Wylie rin chen dbang drag) in the village of Podung (Wylie spo gdung in the Tibetan region called Pemako ( Wylie padma bkod). Size including the cloth surround 53 x 84 cm. Image (melong) size 42 x 63 cm. On the reverse of the thangka is a drawing of a stupa (chorten) and twelve lines of text which thank the many people who have sponsored the painting by providing the 50 year old Rinchen Wangdrak with food and drink while he was working.. Creation dates: Early 20th century. Age of 100 -120 years suggested by current owner. Custodial history: An item originating from the Pemako region of Tibet and handed down from his teacher Rinchen Wangdrak, who apparently painted the thangka.
