A narrative thangka illustrating the story of Gyalsa Besa རྒྱལ་བཟའ་བལ་བཟའ (Wylie rGyal bza’ bal bza’). Also known as Gyelmo gonjor རྒྱལ་མོ་གོང་འབྱོར (Wylie rgyal mo gong 'byor) Size including the cloth surround 148 x 89cm Width at bottom 91 cm. Image (melong) size 84 x 58.5 cm. Richly detailed. Some paint loss due to creasing, some staining and discolouration but otherwise readable. 100-150 years old. Central figure is a King Songtsen Gampo with Shakyamuni Buddha above.. Creation dates: Late 19th / Early 20th century. Custodial history: An object donated to Dolma Ling nunnery by Buchen Gyurme. It probably belonged to one of three Lama Manipa who had fled from Tibet and who continued to perform within the exile Tibetan communities in India and Nepal. These manipa were Buchen Gyurme (Wylie ’Gyur med), Buchen Norgye (Wylie Nor rgyas), and Buchen Passang (Wylie Pa sangs) . The thangka's provenance prior to its deposit at Dolma Ling is unknown.
