Survey and Creation of the Digital Documentary Resources in Nilgiri and Coimbatore (1850-1970) (EAP1274)

Aims and objectives

Ootacamund, discovered by the British in 1819, became the summer capital of Madras Presidency in 1870. The range of diversified collections of the resources here have rich historical connections of British administration.  The major survey resources are: drawings and paintings by British soldier artists, old images of the tribes and their habitations,  Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Madras Presidency monumental collection by Mr. Philo Iruthayanath, handwritten documents of the Planters Association (formation and proceedings), vintage portraits of tea estate bungalows, Royal family portraits, 20th century schools, churches and institutions. This survey will be extended to interconnected sources if any in Coimbatore and Yercaud.
