Documents in the Sufi shrine at Dhar (EAP1416)

Aims and objectives

A collection of charters issued by the Mughal emperors to the medieval complex of Kamal al-Din Chishti in Dhar are preserved by the custodians who have been in charge of the shrine for nearly seven centuries. The documents record endowments for the support of offices and institutions connected to the shrine. Ten carry seals of Mughal emperors: Aurangzeb dated 1665, 1696, 1701, 1703 and 1704; Bahadur Shah dated 1708; Farrukhsiyar dated 1717; Muhammad Shah dated 1722 and 1724; Shah Alam II dated 1760. The documents given valuable information about charitable services, officials and local topography.
