A forgotten military heritage – rescuing the ‘lost’ service records of the King’s African Rifles (EAP1556)

Aims and objectives

This project will digitise recently discovered records of African soldiers serving in the King's African rifles during the First World War. These rare records potentially present the only surviving material that can document this African military heritage and help tell the stories of these men, whose service is otherwise largely forgotten. The records were lost following independence and have not been stored under archival conditions. As a result, there is no inventory and their condition is deteriorating. Working in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Force, this project will document and digitally preserve these important records for future generations.
