Prabir Sen Collection of Kissa Books [1980/81-1986/87]

This fonds consists of three volumes digitised as part of the EAP127 project. The volumes date from 1387-1393 in the Bengali calendar [1980/81-1986/87 in the Gregorian calendar], and were published by Osmania Library.

Kissa books constitute a distinctive kind of popular-market publication, strongly influenced by Islamic culture. The Bengali in which they are written has a markedly Perso-Arabic vocabulary and structure, and the subject-matter draws on Islamic beliefs and traditions and Arabic and Persian narratives. Within this religious-cultural sphere kissa books deal with a wide range of subjects. The three volumes in this collection all relate stories written in the Islamic tradition

The originals are owned and held by Prabir Sen, who collected them from village fairs and hawkers in the Sonarpur region of the South 24-Parganas District, West Bengal, and from sellers on the trains which connect the District to Kolkata.
